TVOut: iPhone/iPod Touch Application output to your TV

The application TVOut has shown up in Cydia for Jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touch devices, and offers promising results. However, a quick test of the appliction shows it is rather useless without Landscape mode support (for games). The developer has stated that it is a work in progress, and that Landscape mode in on the ToDo list. Until then, I'll wait.

This application of course will only work if you have an AV cable for your device.

Netatalk: SSH and FTP a thing of the past for Jailbroken iPhones

The last time I had Jailbroken an iPhone I had to use an FTP Client and install Open SSH on the iPhone in order to transfer files to and from the iPhone.  In all honesty I didn't need to do this very often, however with applications like Cycorder by Saurik (video recorder for Jailbroken iPhones), it is the only way to get the .mov files off of the iPhone.

So why do I think that using an FTP application is a thing of the past?  Well there is now an application called Netatalk that allows your iPhone to appear as a shared device in the Finder (there is a different application for Windows users).  You can then connect to it and have keychain remember your username (root) and password (alpine).  The confusing thing is that Netatalk doesn't show up on the iPhone as an application, so you can't be sure it's installed.  I had some trouble having my iPhone appear and I needed to enable AppleTalk in system preferences, as well as reboot the iPhone.  It now shows up every time it's connected to the same network via Wifi.  Instructions for where the video files are stored and how to get them off your iPhone are available on the download page in Cydia (located in root/var/mobile/Media/Video).  There is a sample video on the Cycorder page (same page viewed in Cydia)

You can download Cycorder and Netatalk for free using Cydia.

iRealSMS: Landscape SMS for Jailbroken iPhones

My past experience with a Jailbroken iPhone found me purchasing a 3rd Party application called iRealSMS.  It manages your text messages much like everyone other 'normal' cell phone.  It has an inbox, sent, drafts, templates, and an outbox.  The great thing was that it allowed you to send text messages using the Landscape mode on the iPhone.  Version 1.0 however was lacking design, and usability.  You couldn't view your text messages in 'Conversation' mode like the iPhone native SMS application which I find is the only good feature of the native app.  The features were lacking so much that when iPhone firmware 2.2 came out, I didn't perform another Jailbreak because I'be been quite happy with the App Store applications, and didn't find iRealSMS worth the Jailbreak ...until today.  I happened to visit the iRealSMS website saw that there is Version 2.0.  They have added a ton of new features, my personal favorites are the "Quick Reply" and "Conversation mode" (like the native SMS app).

The full version is 10 EU, if you purchased an older version like myself the upgrade will cost 2 EU.  If you are a frequent user of SMS, I highly recommend it.

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone, you can find the application in Cydia.

Here are the features for Version 2.0:

• FULL app in Landscape Mode
• Quick Reply from Spring Board or ANY app WITHOUT closing the app
• Conversation Mode
• Your SMS messages organized in folders: Inbox, Drafts, Templates, Outbox, Sent
• Saving messages as drafts or templates
• Search messages by sender's name and text
• Character Counter
• Reply, forward and delete messages
• Delete all messages or delete per folder
• Forward and Reply via Mail
• Insert Contact details and templates
• Master password to restrict access to app
• Big text field - both for reading and writing SMS
• Add sender to contacts
• Turn on/off keyboard autoCorrection and autoCapitalization
• Automatically request sent notification via notification code
• Statusbar notifier for unread SMS
• Continue working while SMS are sent
• Mark all messages as read with one click
• SMS alerts can be deactivated -> no "new SMS" alerts when locked or outside iRealSMS
• Adding contact details to SMS
• Interactive phone numbers and HTML links in SMS-View
• Launches iRealSMS from Address Book
